How does the Safar curriculum develop tarbiyah in students?

Tarbiyah sits at the heart of the Safar curriculum. Islamic education is not just about learning information, but about nurturing a child’s character and helping them grow closer to Allāh.

To support this, Safar has a clear Tarbiyah Framework which focuses on developing nine key qualities in every learner:

  • Servants of Allāh – ʿIbādah and ʿUbūdiyyah
  • People of the Qurʾān
  • Being Like the Prophet ﷺ
  • Devout in Ṣalāh
  • Seekers of Iḥsān – The Best I Can Be
  • Truthful and Trustworthy
  • Company of the Righteous
  • Affinity with the Ummah
  • Prophetic Daʿwah with Lifelong ʿIlm and ʿAmal

These qualities are not taught as separate topics, but are woven throughout the textbooks, workbooks and lessons so that knowledge and character develop together. Our primary Textbooks 1–6 include dedicated Personal Development chapters, which focus on tarbiyah in a practical and relatable way. In our secondary Textbooks 7 and 8, this continues through Personal and Spiritual Development chapters, such as Tazkiyah: Spiritual Growth and Purification, helping students engage with deeper reflection and personal growth.

In practice, this means lessons go beyond facts. Students reflect on meanings, discuss real-life situations and learn how to apply what they study. The Teacher’s Guides include practical activities, while free resources from the Teacher’s Toolbox such as the ṣalāh tracker help build good habits and consistency in worship.

This approach allows teachers to focus not just on what students know, but who they are becoming, helping them grow into confident, practising Muslims who live by what they learn.
