Why do the workbooks include both standard and advanced questions?

From Textbook 2 onwards, the Safar workbooks include two levels of questions, standard and advanced. This allows teachers to differentiate effectively and support a range of abilities within the same class.

Standard questions

These focus on core understanding. They assess basic comprehension of the textbook, reinforce key terms and help students recall essential information from the lesson. They are structured and not open-ended, making them ideal for checking whether students have understood the main content.

Advanced questions

These are designed to develop higher-order thinking. This means going beyond simply remembering information and helping students use their knowledge in a deeper and more meaningful way. Rather than just recalling facts, students are encouraged to understand why something matters, apply what they have learnt, think more critically and express ideas in their own words. These questions are often open-ended, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate analysis, reflection and real understanding.

How to use them in class

Teachers can use their discretion depending on the needs of their students. A common approach is for all students to complete the standard questions, while more able students also attempt the advanced ones. Alternatively, students can be encouraged to attempt as many advanced questions as possible to stretch their thinking and build confidence.

This structure ensures that every learner is supported while also providing opportunities for challenge and deeper engagement.
